Why Hire an IBCLC?
IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. An IBCLC is the international gold standard for assisting with lactation issues and must uphold rigorous professional standards. A lactation consultant (LC) is trained and educated using evidence based practice, can evaluate complex breastfeeding situations, and has extensive breastfeeding knowledge. LC’s must complete 1000 lactation clinical hours and 90 hours of advanced lactation specific education to sit for their exam. An IBCLC will either be a health care professional or be required to complete 14 hrs of health science education. Every 5 years, the IBCLC recertification requires proof of up to date evidence-based education and clinical skills.
You can find less expensive support through lactation specialists/counselors or peer based counselors. Their training is not as rigorous as an IBCLC. If you have a issue with your heart, you will see a cardiologist. If you have a problem with your teeth, you will see a dentist. Why not see an IBCLC when you have breastfeeding difficulties. IBCLC’s are the most educated to assist with a wide variety of lactation problems.
